The Hard Truth About Coaching: Are You Really Getting Strategy, or Just a Shared Testimony?

Here’s the truth that needs to be said: Some coaches are not teaching—they’re sharing.

Strategy should be customized for your business, not copied from someone else's testimony

As business owners, we’ve all invested in coaching programs promising transformation, growth, and success. But let’s be honest—many of those programs are built on testimonies, not strategy.

Instead of teaching you how to fish, coaches are often just handing you the rod they used, the bait they picked, and bragging about the fish they caught. They’ll claim that their journey is the gospel on how to succeed in business, and they’ll double down on it as the only “right way” to grow. But here’s the problem: Your journey is not their journey. What worked for one person doesn’t necessarily work for you—and that’s okay.

Real strategy goes deeper than just offering advice from a single perspective. It’s not about copying someone else's success; it’s about creating a path from where you are now to where you want to be, based on your story, your challenges, and the unique opportunities you have in front of you.

Real strategy is customized, not scripted. It’s about listening—really listening— to your story, your business, and your vision. From there, we craft solutions that address your specific struggles, focus on actionable steps that resonate with you, and build a strategy that supports long-term success.

For example, I recently worked with a client who owns a unique craft business. We didn’t use my retail store story as a template for her. Instead, we discussed her current struggles—how she could better market her one-of-a-kind creations, improve processes, and use her existing clientele to attract new customers. We didn’t just map out generic tactics; we identified five actionable steps she could take within the next 30 days—steps she understood, felt comfortable with, and believed would help her grow her business.

The real difference between simply sharing a story and offering true strategy lies in the partnership between coach and client.

Real strategy requires active collaboration. It involves a back-and-forth dialogue, brainstorming solutions together, and adapting advice based on your business—not someone else’s.

So, if you're ready to stop following someone else's path and start creating a strategy that’s tailored to you, let’s talk.

Real strategy is available—it just requires the right partnership.
